Warangal: Food poisoning lands 51 KGBV girls in hospitals

Warangal: Fifty-one students and a teacher of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) suffered food poisoning in Mupparam village of Warangal Urban district on Thursday night.

All the affected were shifted to MGM Hospital in Warangal for treatment and a medical camp was set up at the school to take care of the remaining students at the hostel.

All the students and the teacher recovered and were discharged on Friday.

After Thursday's supper, girls complained of discomfort. A few of them showed signs of severe stomach-ache and started to vomit. The headmaster rushed to the school on receiving information.

The headmaster sought help of 108 ambulance service and shifted the affected girls to MGM Hospital. Meanwhile, the parents of the student rushed to MGM hospital. It was learnt that the girls were served rice, sambar and potato curry for supper.

A few hours after they had their meals, they started to fall sick. Speaking to media persons, the students alleged that mess contractor Dharma Raju was supplying low-quality food made from rotten vegetables. "We request the officials to take action against the contractor," said a student.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at MGM Hospital B Harish Raj said that a team of doctors immediately began treatment for the girls for food poisoning. All the students and one teacher recovered and were discharged on Friday, he said.

Warangal Urban District Education Officer (DEO) K Narayana Reddy said that the students are safe. A total 250 students are studying in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) hostel, out of which 51 students had shown symptoms of food poisoning and were shifted to MGM hospital.

"We have collected food samples and inquiring the incident. Strict action will be taken against the mess contractor," he said.
