Warangal Urban, Rural districts may be renamed as Hanamkonda, Warangal

Warangal: Almost three years after the reorganisation of districts in Telangana, the State government is likely to rechristen the names of Warangal Urban and Rural districts as Hanamkonda and Warangal respectively. It has been on the cards for some time.

Minister for Panchayat Raj E Dayakar Rao had hinted about it a few days ago and on Monday Warangal East MLA Nannapuneni Narender made a fervent appeal to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to rename Rural district as Warangal besides including East constituency under it.

The proposal is not a new one.

In fact, the government had announced Hanamkonda district when it took up reorganisation of districts in 2016. However, due to strong resentment from various people's organisations the proposal was discarded.

The civil societies then objected to the proposal citing that it would be detrimental to the culture and heritage of the Kakatiya dynasty. This forced the government carve out Rural and Urban districts in place of Warangal and Hanamkonda.

With the whole administrative set-up of erstwhile Warangal district spread across Hanamkonda region over the decades, the functioning of Urban district did not face any problem. Adding more comfort for the Urban district administration, the construction of Integrated Collectorate Complex is in progress.

On the other hand, the Rural district has to function from makeshift buildings located in the Urban district as the construction of its Integrated Collectorate Complex remained a non-starter with leaders chugging in different directions demanding it in their region.
