Amaravati: The police on Monday arrested 120 sanitation workers who have been staging dharna at Mandadam village in Amaravati demanding payment of salaries of the last five months.

The Sanitation workers started gathering in the village demanding payment of salaries. They alleged that the contractor failed to pay the salaries of the last five months. They wanted to take the matter to the notice of the government at the Secretariat. However, the police refused to allow them and stopped them. They used force to prevent them from entering the Secretariat.

Meanwhile, the police officers tried to contact the contractor who had been evading the payment of salaries to the sanitation workers. The CITU leaders who joined the protest in support to the agitating sanitation workers demanded immediate action against the contractor. The police arrested them for which the sanitation workers took exception.

When the sanitation workers and the CITU leaders Ch Babu Rao, Vallabhaneni Venkateswara Rao, Bhagya Raju and Ravi along with others staged sit-in on the road, the police bundled them into auto rickshaws to take them to the police station.

The arrested sanitation workers were shifted to various police stations of Tulluru, Pedakurapadu, Amaravati and others.
