Amaravati: In what could be described as an insult to the Indian Missile man and Bharata Ratna Awardee APJ Abdul Kalam, the AP government issued GO MS No 78, on November 4, which attracted huge criticism from wide section of people.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has re-christened "Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards" in the name of his father YS Rajasekhar Reddy as "Y.S.R. Vidya Puraskars".

In fact, the then chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu Administration named these awards in the name of Abdul Kalam in 2017 to promote quality and excellence in education, through the scheme of "Pratibha Awards".

Under this scheme, meritorious students who excel in the SSC Public Examinations will be awarded with merit certificates, a momento and scholarship to meet the cost of higher education.

Now, the Government has proposed implementation of scheme of "Pratibha State level Awards" for the academic year of 2019-20.

B Rajasekhar, Principal Secretary, School Education department has issued the orders by stating that, "After careful examination of the matter, the Government has decided to introduce the Y.S.R. Vidya Puraskars from the year 2019 onwards on the occasion of birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad which is being celebrated as National Education Day across the Country on 11th November".

He further stated that, "Accordingly, Government hereby order to re-designate the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards as Y.S.R. Vidya Puraskars.

These awards will be distributed at the district level with the participation of District Ministers, MPs, MLAs and restricting the awards to only Government School students.

Reacting on it, BJP leader Lanka Dinakar said that it was an unfortunate development in Andhra Pradesh. This showed utmost arrogance in the decisions of Andhra Pradesh Government by disrespecting the great Scientist and former President of India by redesignating his name with the name of father of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, he added.

It is the best example that how the names of the real heroes of the nation can be suppressed with the names of their kin and kith in the dynasty politics, Dinakar blamed.

When this correspondent tried to enquire about the reason for changing the name of Abdul Kalam, Rajasekhar didn't respond.
