State government is planning to establish a dedicated Directorate of Nursing to effectively to ensure nursing services in all the government hospitals.

Amaravati: State government is planning to establish a dedicated Directorate of Nursing to effectively to ensure nursing services in all the government hospitals. Under this proposal, the nursing staff will be recognised based on their skills and will be posted to the primary health centres in rural areas, secondary and tertiary hospitals and district and teaching hospitals.

After completing their courses and acquiring skills in nursing, the nurses will be recruited and will be given postings depending on their skills. The proposal has emerged after the State government transferred the working nurses in the government hospitals recently.

Some highly-skilled nurses appealed to the government to give them postings at PHCs in rural areas and secondary hospitals in the suburban and urban areas despite knowing that the vacancies available at other major hospitals.

K S Jawahar Reddy, Principal Secretary of Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, told this correspondent that he had come to know that the highly-skilled nurses had got the postings in interior parts though nurses with normal skills can do well at such centres. What was the point in posting the highly-skilled nurses in PHCs when her services are required for emergency surgeries, he said.

In addition to that, the government is considering establishing at least one nursing college at every teaching and major hospitals. At the same time, the government has made all arrangements for recruiting qualified persons.

In the first phase, the government will recruit nurses to fill the vacancies. The Finance Department also gave clearance. In the second phase, the government will induct the nurses as per the Indian Public Health (IPH) Standards.

It would be more expensive to maintain the IPH Standards, but still Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is willing to provide medical services to the people without bothering about the expenditure, said Jawahar Reddy. The government is also planning to bring a new legislation for Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) to strengthen it and give autonomy. This Act will be enacted in the ensuing Assembly session, he said.
