Amaravati: The state government prefers allotting land to the poor for construction of houses instead of apartments, both in rural and urban areas. Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday asked the officials to find suitable land for distribution by Ugadi.

He instructed the officials to give land pattas for the poor by the Telugu new year. The present plots where the poor have been staying are not properly maintained leading to unhygienic surroundings, said the Chief Minister.

He asked the officials to find a solution to renovate the buildings they were staying in and tackle the ownership problems in the plots. He also instructed them to prepare guidelines for the regularisation of illegal structures.

The Chief Minister further ordered the officials to charge a nominal fee for regularisation of such lands up to two cents. If the land exceeds beyond two cents, normal regularisation fee should be collected. He instructed the officials to construct houses and give to people staying at the riverside and canal-side as the house conditions pose threat to their lives.

Previously, there was no registration made even after the land was given. "Now, we want to register the land immediately. Chandrababu had forcibly taken back the lands that were already given," he said. He instructed the officials to utilize the government lands to the maximum for the construction of houses.

The officials explained to the Chief Minister about the identification of beneficiaries by Grama Sabhas. According to the details given by the officials, so far 20,47,325 beneficiaries have been identified. As much as 19,389 acre land in rural areas and estimated that more 8,000 acre would be required.

In urban areas, 2,559 acre land has been identified and estimated that another 11,000 acre would be needed. The officials estimated that approximately Rs 10,000 crore to 12,000 crore will be required for this project.

The Chief Minister ordered display of beneficiaries' list at village and ward Secretariats. At the same time, reason should be mentioned in case of rejected applications.Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed the officials to keep 10 per cent additional lands as a buffer. So, there will be no problem even if the applicants are more than the estimation. Applications will be received till January.
