The Covid-19 positive cases have been skyrocketing in Chittoor district and crossed 1,000 mark now.

Tirupati: The Covid-19 positive cases have been skyrocketing in Chittoor district and crossed 1,000 mark now. There were 286 positive cases in the district on June 1 which have now gone up to 1,020. Similarly, the number of active cases has gone up to 598 from 86 during these 24 days while 416 patients were cured and discharged. So far, six deaths are reported. Now, 60 out of 66 mandals, have entered the list of having coronavirus patients. Tirupati has already registered 165 cases of which 130 are active cases. The city has more active cases as more cases are being reported only after lockdown was lifted.

Contrary to this, Srikalahasti reported more cases during lockdown which is now having 131 cases, has only 37 active cases with 93 patients are cured and one death was reported. Puttur reported 77 cases followed by Chittoor with 76 and Tirupati rural 58. Tirupati urban and Tirupati rural together account for about 225 cases. Several people were of the view that the city needs to go in for another lockdown as the cases have surged only after the restrictions are relaxed. While doctors are advocating repeatedly the importance of wearing masks and following physical distancing, these advices are going into deaf ears.

The Head of Community Medicine department in SV Medical College Dr G Ravi Prabhu has said that if both individuals wear masks, the transmission of the virus will be reduced by 95 percent and if only one person wears mask the transmission is reduced by 70 percent. But, there were no takers for such suggestions.

For instance, a meeting was held in RDO office in Tirupati on Wednesday in which Dy Chief Minister K Narayana Swamy, Chittoor and Tirupati MPs N Reddeppa and B Durgaprasada Rao and others took part. When the dignitaries released the mega cheque, they ignored physical distancing totally and none of them wore a mask except District Collector. There is a need for

public representatives to strictly adhere to Covid-19 protocols

which will send a proper message

to the public as well.
