Vijayawada: City Commissioner of Police Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao on Friday said that the Home Guard division was established in Vijayawada in 1963 for the first time. The commissioner participated in the Home Guards Raising Day celebrations held at police parade grounds here. Joint commissioner Nagendra was also present on the occasion.

The Commissioner said that in Vijayawada, there are 1,063 home guards and recalled that the salary was Rs 9,000 in 2014 and at present they draw Rs 21,000. They are on toes at the time of natural calamities and festival bandobast.

He further said that Rs five lakh compensation was given to those who died on duty. They get up to Rs two lakh bank loans and home guards are honoured with Utkrisht Seva Awards, said the Commissioner.
