Vijayawada: CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna has asked Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to take measures for supply of sand and resolve the problem being faced by lakhs of construction workers.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, the CPI State secretary said on Sunday that nearly 30 lakh workers lost their livelihood due to non-availability of sand for the past five months. He pointed out that the Ministers were saying that the State government could not supply sand due to the floods and rains.

Ramakrishna has questioned then why there was no sand problem in Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra which too have faced rains and problems of floods. He said the State government should take the responsibility for the supply of sand and implement the free sand policy.

He said utter chaos prevailed in the State and traders of steel, cement and building materials had no business for the last five months. He said the CPI would launch Sand Satyagraha if the government fails to address the problem.

The CPI leader demanded that the government pay ex gratia of R 10 lakh to the kin of the construction workers who committed suicide in the State and Rs 10,000 financial assistance to the construction workers in the State.
