Gudivada: Civil Supplies Minister Kodali Nani has said neither the government nor the employees are ready for the Panchayat elections in February 2021.

Thousands of government employees working in the Police, Education and Revenue departments in the State are already hit by Covid-19 and not attending to the duties, he said.

Kodali Nani responded to the proceedings given by State Election Commission on conducting the Panchayat polls in February. The Minister said Chief Secretary Neelam Sawhney made it clear that the government is not ready for the Panchayat elections in view of the Corona pandemic.

Speaking to media in Gudivada on Wednesday, Kodali Nani said the SEC did not show interest in holding elections in March when the State government proposed.

He said there is scope for the spread of coronavirus due to the postal ballots voting because one voter has to cast two or three votes in the local body elections. He said the State government has expressed its view very clearly that it is not ready for the elections in view of the more than 1000 Corona cases every day.

He said Election Commissioner Ramesh Kumar would retire in March 2021 and very eager to conduct the polls in February to benefit the Telugu Desam Party. He said Ramesh Kumar has no respect for the State government or the constitutional institutions.

Kodali Nani demanded that Ramesh Kumar should resign to the post of SEC. He suggested Ramesh Kumar to act with dignity and desist from doing politics.

He suggested Ramesh to contest the polls on behalf of the TDP after the retirement from the post of SEC in March 2021. He alleged TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu had been trying to win elections in some Panchayats by resorting to the irregularities when Ramesh Kumar acts as the State Election Commissioner in February 2021.

He said the SEC had postponed the elections proposed by the State government on the pretext of the Covid cases registered in March and April. He recalled that the State government had also started preparations for the local body polls but the SEC had put the brake on them.
