Except sporadic incidents at one or two places, GMC elections passed off peacefully in Guntur city on Wednesday
Guntur: Except sporadic incidents at one or two places, GMC elections passed off peacefully in Guntur city on Wednesday. A total 57.15 per cent votes were polled in the GMC elections. There are 57 divisions in Guntur city, out of which Reddypalem division corporator was elected unanimously. Polling which began on a dull note slowly picked up. Women, youth and elders actively participated in the polling and exercised their franchise.
BJP former State president Kanna Lakshsminarayana exercised his franchise at Stall Girls High School in Guntur city. MP Galla Jayadev and Narasaraopet MP Lavu Srikrishnadevarayalu exercised their franchise. Media persons were not allowed enter polling centre premises. As elections were conducted after one decade, both TDP and YSRCP leaders did their best to win in the elections.
TDP leaders alleged that YSRCP activists rigged the votes at 42 division. YSRCP leaders allegedly attacked the TDP activists. TDP activists damaged cars relating to YSRCP Guntur Parliament constituency in-charge Modugual Venugopala Reddy. Police swung into action and resorted to lathi charge and brought the situation under control. The police booked cases against both the groups.
Guntur urban SP RN Ammi Reddy said that GMC elections were peacefully conducted. He said that except sporadic incidents, no major incidents were reported. TDP and YSRCP leaders clashed at 42nd division in Guntur city. "We have booked cases against two groups," he said.
Similarly, tension prevailed at AL College premises, when the both YSRCP leaders and TDP leaders disputed over alleged rigging in the polling booth. YSRCP Guntur Parliament in-charge Modugula Venugopala Reddy and party State general secretary Lella Appi Reddy rushed to spot. Police swung into action and brought the situation under control.
