Kadapa: MP Avinash Reddy gave an assurance to supply water to the proposed Industrial park at Kopparthi village by constructing pipeline to utilise Somasila backwaters. With an intention to provide drinking water to Kadapa city and to improve irrigation water facility, the state government had decided to construct Sujala Somasila Scheme (SSS) with the estimated cost of Rs 1,970 crore. Under this scheme the government proposed to divert the back waters of Somasila reservoir located near Kotapadu of Vontimitta mandal in 2008. It was also planned to use water for industries, educational and research centres.
G O NO on 28th June 2008 was issued by allocating 0.80 tmcft water to Kadapa city, for the needs of Industrial park at Kopparthi, 0.80 tmcft water to Produturu municipality, 0.20 tmcft to Idupulapaya IIIT, 1 tmcft to Kadiri Science City, 1.20 tmcft to Knowledge Centre in Ananthapur district and to Chilamathuru by drawing water from Somasila reservoir.
Government had released Rs 50 crore in the first phase for basic infrastructure facilities including 2km length main pipe line against its total length 202 km from Kotamitta village of Ontimitta mandal to Ananthapur distsrict
Works were started from Somasila back waters under package -1 up to Kanumalomapalle village of Sidhavatam mandal in September 2008 and Rs 15.50 crore were spent. However works were stopped due to various reasons.
Subsequently, government came with package-2 in which it was proposed to construct 23 km pipeline from Kanulomapalle to Yogivemana University with estimated cost of Rs 115 crore. Pipeline for 7 km was constructed by spending Rs 35.50 crore. But these works were also stopped in the middle.
Later, Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy took initiative to take up the SSS scheme with revised estimates in 2009. Again, the works were stopped after his death.
Presently, the YSRCP government has decided to construct pipeline to about 25 km for supplying water to Industrial park in Kadapa district.
