Kakinada : The impact of the Nivar cyclone is being felt at Uppada beach with sea turning rough at U Kothapalli and some coastal areas in the East Godavari district. Peripheral clouds were seen in the district due to depression.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning to Andhra Pradesh. Nivar cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Chennai when it makes landfall in Chennai on Wednesday evening.

The IMD said that a storm surge of about 2metres above the sea level is likely around the time of landfall, causing inundation of low-lying areas. The sea waters crossed the geo-tube wall and touched the Mayapatnam road at Konapapapet village in U Kothapallimandal and fishermen moved their boats to safer places.

District collector D Muralidhar Reddy directed the officials to be fully prepared to effectively deal with the impact of Cyclone Nivar in the Bay of Bengal. He issued directions on Nivar cyclone control measures to district, divisional and mandal officers.

Collector said that a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclone and was centred at 700 km south-east of Puducherry and 740 km south-east of Chennai. Nivar cyclone is expected to intensify in the next 24 hours and cross the coast of Karaikal and Mamallapuram off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on November 25.

According to the IMD, the cyclone will affect the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh as well as the district. In the wake of the Nivar cyclone, the Collector informed the officials that no leave will be grantedand that those already on leave were ordered to report for duty immediately. He said that the control rooms should be set up at all divisional centres, including the Collectorate, are required to operate 24 hours to monitor storm control and relief operations.

He instructed the officials to conduct a wide awareness and campaign on storm warnings and precautions in the coastal villages through Village and Ward Secretariats. He directed the officials to be ready with assisted resettlement arrangements to move people to safer areas, if necessary. Due to the Nivar cyclone forecast, the fishermen should not go into the sea, he added.
