Nellore: District collector K V N Chakradhar Babu a detailed report on crop damage due to Cyclone Nivar would be submitted to the state government by December 15. He, along with the Kavali MLA R Prathap Kumar Reddy, visited the flood-affected areas in Kavali Assembly constituency on Tuesday.
He also asked the officials to prepare a detailed project report for constructing a bypass canal for a length of 5 km in Bogole mandal for preventing floods in future. The MLA informed that aquaculture in the constituency had suffered a huge loss due to the recent heavy rains. He also explained to the collector that around 15 villages have been inundated in Bogole mandal. Juvvaladinne, Venkateswarapalem, Vaddipalem, Kotha Bangarupalem, Patha Bangarupalem and another 10 villages in the mandal were inundated by floodwater, he added.
Pratham Kumar Reddy urged the collector to consider the bypass canal for bailing out the people from flash flood. Responding instantly, the collector asked the officials to prepare a report on the proposed canal. He also sought a report on the losses to the aqua sector in the region.
Chakradhar Babu enquired about the viability of constructing the bypass canal in the area. A 100-metre bypass canal starting from Juvvaladinne with a length of 5 km would be a right solution to the problem, the officials said. In fact, a 2-km-long canal is already there in the area, officials informed.
The collector asked a detailed project report for expanding the canal. He instructed them to restore the road network in the area. After observing a breach to the canal at Tallacheruvu, he directed the irrigation officials to take measures immediately for closing it.
Speaking to the media, the collector said that they would supply seeds to the farmers at 80 per cent subsidy. Coastal areas in the district had witnessed strong gales at a velocity of 60-70 km per hour at the time of landfall of Cyclone Nivar. He said they had alerted the people and took measures for shifting them to the relief camps thus prevented human loss. The state government would provide financial assistance of Rs 500 to each family who got shelter in the relief camps during the cyclone. He also visited the Kovurupalli village secretariat and interacted with the staff there.
