Amaravati: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Prof Dr Rajagopal Chidambaram has stressed on the need to promote more research into basic sciences.
Addressing the students of SRM University-AP in connection with the launching of Research Day introduced for the first time by the university here on Saturday, the senior scientist, who shared his experience with former President Abdul Kalam, said that he took into consideration the per capita electricity consumption and per capita female literacy rate as criterion for development.
Congratulating the SRM University-AP for making efforts in various fields like energy storing devices with Amar Raja Batteries, hardening 22-karat gold to improve its strength with Tanishq and in 3D printing of gold jewellery and manufacturing hydrogen-run train with Indian Railways, he said that it was appropriate that the University had introduced the Research Day like Father's Day and Mother's Day.
He said that he was glad that the university was working on advanced ultra-supercritical thermal plant with the AGCAR, BHEL and NTPC. He said the global warming did some good to cool countries like Norway and damaged the environment in countries like India. Referring to the latest technology, he said the cyber security is another field which has become a part of our lives.Prof Vengamma, VC and director of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), said medical field needs a lot of research though there has been much advances in medical technology.
Referring to the advances in research, she said that when there was attack of SARS virus, it took 130 days to identify the virus whereas it took only seven days to identify Coronavirus. Earlier, Prof D Narayana Rao, pro vice-chancellor of SRM University, welcomed the gathering which include a huge number of students.
Dr D Gunasekharan, Registrar of the university also participated.
