Reputed political families in Nellore lose charm
- Their heirs are facing identity crisis in politics
- Most members of these families are in YSRCP
Nellore: Political families that have great reputation in Nellore district have gradually been vanishing from politics due to entry of new faces in politics.
Anam, Nedurumalli, Nallapureddy, Magunta, Bezawada, Rebala and many other families were influential in the State some time ago and now their family members are striving hard for identity and legacy.
In fact, Nellore is known for political activity and local leaders served as Chief Ministers, Minister, Governors, and held many other important positions. Bezawada Gopala Reddy, Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy served as Chief Ministers. Gopala Reddy, who is known as Andhra Tagore, subsequently served as Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Now, no one is from his family in politics.
Rebala family is a popular dynasty in the district, who are prominent for donations similar to Dodla family. Now, town hall in the heart of the city is on Rebala Lakshminarasa Reddy's name. He served as Municipal Chairman and got elected to Lok Sabha in 1957. Rebala Dasaratha Rami Reddy is also from the district, who was political rival of AC Subba Reddy. Anam family belongs to East Godavari district, who migrated to Nellore during the beginning of 19th century. AC Subba Reddy was the first-generation leader in his family.
Born in Rajahmundry, AC Subba Reddy contested from Rapur in 1962 and 1967 and served as Minister in Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and Kasu Brahmananda Reddy's cabinets. Anam Venkata Reddy was brother of AC Subba Reddy and worked as Home Minister in PV Narasimha Rao's cabinet for a limited period. He also served as Minister in Jalagam Vengala Rao's cabinet.
Anam Sanjeeva Reddy, another leader from the family, also served as Minister in Brahmananda Reddy's cabinet after death of Subba Reddy. Their legacy continued and now his grandson Ramanarayana Reddy, who is contesting from Venkatagiri on YSRCP ticket is the only popular leader in their family.
Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy from Vakadu served as Chief Minister of AP for 20 months in 1990s. Now, his son Ramkumar Reddy is facing identity crisis, who recently shifted his loyalties to the YSRCP. Janardhan Reddy's wife Rajayalakshmi won from Venkatagiri constituency and also served as Minister in Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy's cabinet.
Nallapureddy family is from Kota in Gudur division. Srinivasulu Reddy had played a crucial role in formation of TDP. He served as Minister in NT Rama Rao's cabinet. His son Prasanna Kumar Reddy is striving hard to continue in the politics representing Kovur constituency from the YSRCP.
Magunta Subbarami Reddy started his career as MP in the district and now his brother Srinivasulu Reddy settled in Prakasam district. Subbarami Reddy's wife Magunta Parvathamma also elected as MLA from Kavali constituency during 2004 elections from Congress and now she is away from politics. Interestingly, majority members from th
ese families are in the opposition YSRCP.
