Srikakulam: Water resources in Srikakulam district have received significant inflows as upstream areas in Odisha received considerable rainfall. Low pressure in the Bay of Bengal did not yield good rains in Srikakulam district, but in adjacent Odisha there was considerable rainfall leading to good inflows in the district.

Heavy rainfall was reported in the catchment areas of Vamsadhara river in Odisha till Tuesday. As per Vamsadhara engineers, 70.2 mm rainfall was recorded at Kutragada, 36.2 mm rainfall at Gudari, 21.4 mm rainfall at Mohana area, 34.6 mm rainfall at Mahendragada, 54.6 mm rainfall at Gunupur and 42.2 mm rainfall recorded at Kasinagar. All these areas are located in Gajapathi distric of Odisha and covered under catchment areas of Vamsadhara.

As a result water level increased at Gotta Barrage located on Vamsadhara river. Engineers are releasing 1,538 cusecs of water for crops through right main canal (RMC) and left main canal (LMC) of Gotta Barrage. Under Gotta barrage 2.20 lakh acres get irrigation water. Another 2,759 cusecs of water is also released into river from the barrage by opening four gates.

Water level reached to full level up to 64 meters in Madduvalasa reservoir situated at the confluence of both Suvarnamukhi and Vegavathi rivers. As a result of heavy rainfall in catchment areas of both the rivers in Rayagada district of Odisha water level is increasing in the two rivers. Officials decided to release water from the reservoir to kharif crops through both right and left main canals.
