Vijayawada: Telugu Desam party national president N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday alleged that a total of 35 lakh construction workers lost their livelihood because of artificial sand scarcity created by the YSRCP government.

He alleged that the sand scarcity in the state was created by sand mafia which was active with the full support of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He further said the State government should be held responsible for the death of nearly 50 construction workers in the State during the last few months.

Naidu observed a one-day Deeksha at the Dharna Chowk on Thursday to protest the alleged failure of the YSRCP government to address the sand shortage. Party leaders K Atchannaidu, Kesineni Srinivas, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, Buddha Venkanna and others were present.

A large number of TDP workers and construction workers participated in the Deeksha and expressed their solidarity with the TDP chief. Speaking on the occasion, Naidu said as many as 35 lakh construction workers had lost their livelihood due to the artificial scarcity created by the government.

He alleged that the sand was smuggled to Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Odisha and demanded that the government tighten security at the border districts to check sand smuggling to other States.

He demanded that the government pay Rs 25 lakh compensation to the kin of the construction workers who died and pay financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to the construction workers due to its failure to solve the sand scarcity problem in the state. He said the Ministers are giving contradictory statements on sand scarcity and citing floods as responsible for the sand shortage.

He questioned why only Andhra Pradesh is facing sand scarcity in the country when many States are facing floods problem. He alleged the YSRCP government is registering false cases against SC/ST and social media against the functionaries of TDP leaders and workers.

He demanded that Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy tender apology to the people of Andhra Pradesh for its failure to resolve the sand scarcity problem in the State. He said the construction workers are not able to send their children to schools
