Vijayawada: Krishna Devarayalu, from Karnataka, the descendent of Vijayanagaram Emperor Sri Krishna Deva Rayalu, appealed to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to name the proposed district of Penukonda after the Great Emperor Sri Krishna Devarayalu.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Krishna Devarayalu recalled that Penukonda was the summer camp of the emperors of Vijayanagaram and it was also used as the second capital city of the empire after the capital city of Hampi.
Even today many historical constructions, temples were seen in Penukonda. He said that it would be apt to name Penukonda after the name of Sri Krishna Devarayalu since the Telugu people owned him from time immemorial.
Sri Krishna Devarayalu was an exemplary ruler and powerful emperor. Hence it would be apt to name Penukonda after him, he added.
He appealed to the Chief Minister to think in this direction and take a decision to make the erstwhile emperor's name to stay in people's minds forever.
