Visakhapatnam: At a time when more number of coronavirus positive cases are getting recorded in the district, a new controversy took a tournament route.

At Gopalapatnam, 89th ward YSRCP leader D. Kiran is conducting Avanthi Cricket Tournament at Chandra Nagar to mark Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao's birthday celebrations. This drew criticism from various quarters as many are displeased with the organisers of the cricket tournament which began on Tuesday against the lockdown norms. What appears to be even more disturbing is that the tournament was organised close to the containment zones.

Locals opined that it is unsafe to play cricket drawing crowd and risking lives, especially in times of pandemic.

Police took action against those who violated lockdown norms. Even those who conducted awareness programmes to mark World Environment Day were not spared. But, when many gathered at the grounds to watch the tournament, the cops seem to turn a blind eye.
