Vizianagaram: As many as 40 persons ended their lives during the lockdown. The lockdown, which was imposed in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, undermined several sectors. It led to sufferings of daily wage earners like masons, electricians, plumbers, construction workers and others.

The daily wage earners were able to make ends meet for two weeks, but later they found the going tough.

Out of 40 deaths, the police said that around 30 had committed suicide as they were depressed with financial problems.

A mason at Phoolbhagh in Vizianagaram committed suicide by hanging after he had lost employment. As he was deprived of income, he took the extreme step. A small-time trader at Kothavalasa ended his life as he was caught in vicious debt trap during lockdown.

Seven persons committed suicide during March and five in April, The number of persons who ended their lives in May was 15 and 13 in June.

A Kondala Rao, of Vizianagaram town, who was as a research scholar at IIT Kharagpur, had also committed suicide as he remained stranded Kharagpur and his wife was in Vizianagaram.

Noted psychologist P Visesh said those who were impatient and lacked positive attitude would take such extreme steps.
