Tirupati: Contrary to the expectations, the polling percentage in the election held on Thursday is much less than the previous election held in 2014. According to official sources, the poll percentage of Chittoor district stood at 72.4 per cent in the election held Thursday against 79.3 percent recorded in the previous elections in 2014.

Large scale awareness programmes by the Election Commission of India to increase voting and one more new political outfit Jana Sena Party (JSP) entry in the electoral battle making it a triangle fight and its youth force also failed to increase the poll percentage in the border district.

The average polling percentage in the district, which was 10.33 in the first two hours, jumps to 25.18 per cent at 11 am and saw a big leap in the next two hours to reach 42.60 per cent (at 1 pm). Even in the afternoon hours, voters braving scorching sun lined up to vote resulting in the poll percentage reach 57.60 percent at 3 pm and later on went up to 63.95 at 4 pm in the evening.

­Interestingly, the compact and out and out urban constituency Tirupati with more educated is at the bottom with 58.25 per cent while GD Nellore a rural dominated area and a reserved constituency on the Tamil Nadu border registered 84.6 percent to be on top in the polling percentage.
