Bengaluru: The Karnataka health department has decided to increase special allowance of specialist doctors, medical officers, and dentists with effect from September 1, 2020. The doctors who worked during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic risking their lives demanded a special pay. Health & Medical Education Minister Dr K.Sudhakar promptly responded and granted their demanded.

The special allowance of doctors has not been revised since 2015. The special allowance for MBBS/BDS gaduates with 0-6 years experience, has been increased from Rs 21,000 to Rs 30,500; from Rs 42,600 to 55,500 for PG degree/diploma; allowance of super specialty doctors has been increased from 50,800 to Rs.64,500

Karnataka Medical Officers Association in its memorandum to the government sought special allowance on the lines of those of Central Government Health Services (CGHS). Minister Sudhakar held a meeting with department officials to discuss the demands of the doctors and agreed to take up the same with the finance department.

Speaking to media, Mr Sudhakar said that, "In recognition of the service of doctors during the pandemic and to encourage young doctors to take up rural service in the future, the special allowances of specialist doctors, general duty doctors and dental doctors serving under Health and Family Welfare department have been revised effective from 1st September 2020."

Revised special allowance

MBBS/BDS – Rs.22,000 to Rs.37,500

PG/Diploma grads – Rs.43,700 to Rs.64,500

Super Specialty doctors – Rs.52,100 to Rs.73,500

For doctors with 13-20 years experience

• MBBS/BDS – Rs.23,000 to Rs.44,500

• PG/Diploma grads – Rs.44,800 to Rs.73,500

• Super Specialty doctors – Rs.58,400 to Rs.83,500

• Those with more than 25 years of experience:

• MBBS/BDS – Rs.23,000 to Rs.60,500

• PG/Diploma grads – Rs.44,800 to Rs.93,500

• Super Specialty doctors – Rs.58,400 to Rs.1,03,500
