Bengaluru: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the December 4 order of the Karnataka High Court which directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to hold elections to 198 wards within six weeks.

"Until further orders, there shall be a stay of operation of the impugned judgment (s) and order (s) passed by the Karnataka High Court," the order stated. The Supreme Court also issued notices to the State Election Commission and the original petitioners before the High Court, former corporators M Shivaraju and Abdul Wajid, and Ravi Jagan.

In the plea filed through advocate Shubhranshu Padhi, the State government stated that the Karnataka High Court asked the government to go ahead with the elections in 198 wards despite the fact that the Amendment Act increased the wards to 243. The petitioners pointed out the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2020 has been made to increase the seats for councillors from 198 to 243 wards by a notification on January 14, 2020.
