71% of students say homework easy with online support
To understand the hows and whys of the bittersweet relationship between students and homework, Brainly, world’s largest online peer-to-peer learning community, conducted a survey among its Indian user-base.
Hyderabad: To understand the hows and whys of the bittersweet relationship between students and homework, Brainly, world's largest online peer-to-peer learning community, conducted a survey among its Indian user-base. The survey which witnessed active participation of more than 2000 students, drew insights regarding the excuses put forth by students on not being able to turn up homework on time. These insights also include Bengaluru students from various schools across the city.
While many of the students claimed submitting their assignments on time, around 43 per cent Hyderabad students have admitted that they were not able to do so and had to use an excuse for the same. Interestingly enough, a daring bunch of 62 per cent students said that they never used an excuse while around 30 per cent used excuses frequently. When inquired about the success rate of their respective excuses, 45 per cent of students admitted to not being able to pass the test most of the times, while about 36 per cent succeeded, almost every time.
Ingenuine and convincing- the two important ingredients of a successful excuse- are what the students usually strive for, when considering using an excuse. While a good number of Hyderabad students insisted on having never used an excuse, there were others who admitted to using excuses including: 'lost the homework' or 'technological difficulties' (26 per cent), 'lack of time', 'personal injury' (18 per cent), 'headache', 'forgot the homework', 'sick sibling/relative' (14.1 per cent), 'undisclosed family emergency' (9.8 per cent), or even the hilarious 'dog ate my homework' (5 per cent). Creatively smart, about 906 responses were about the craziest reasons that students got away with, such as- 'forgot about it' (45 per cent), 'someone stole it out of my backpack' (14 per cent), 'Fever, lack of time, lost it, I told the truth, no excuses, spilled ink on it etc (9 per cent), 'Spilled coffee and ruined it' (9 per cent), 'laptop crashed' (7 per cent), 'dog ate it' (5 per cent), 'I turned it into a different class' (4.4 per cent), 'child ate it' (4.1 per cent), 'a wind gust blew it out of my hands' (4 per cent), 'it was lost in a fire' (3.4 per cent).
Amidst all these hilarious responses, it was worth noticing that more than 71 per cent of students felt how they would be able to complete their homework on time if they could find adequate help online. This indicates to the severe need for making the internet a resourceful space for students to benefit from better, in the near future.
Sharing the objective behind conducting this survey, Michał Borkowski, co-founder & CEO, Brainly remarked, "Homework has always been a dreaded aspect of studies for myriad reasons. We tried to discern some with this survey and the results indicate how the excuses have almost always been a result of their inability to get unstuck with their homework problems. A collaborative attitude towards homework is observed to have found great acceptance and appreciation among parents, teachers, and above all, students. Having a peer-to-peer approach in a stimulating environment has the potential to not just make the concept of homework interesting and engaging, but also make academic learning more effective. As more and more students embrace online sources and collaboration, platforms like Brainly can make homework assignments less daunting and learning more fruitful, guiding students from questioning to understanding."
With a monthly Indian user-base of more than 15 million and growing, Brainly has emerged as a premier tool for facilitation of education in the digital era. Through its unique approach of peer-to-peer learning, Brainly enables students to get acquainted with academic concepts to their very core.
