Visakhapatnam: GITAM Deemed to be University Institute of Nursing organised the oath-taking and lamp-lighting ceremony for the third batch of BSc Nursing students here on Wednesday.

GITAM Vice-President Prof. M. Gangadhara Rao advised the nursing students to maintain highest standards of their noble profession and inculcate sense of maturity, empathy, dedication and commitment.

He suggested that every student should keep abreast with latest technological advancements and scientific knowledge about medical field. He added that the lamp-lighting ceremony signified student's decision to be trained to care for the sick.

GITAM In-Charge Vice-Chancellor Prof.K.Sivarama Krishna in his address, focused on the dedication, commitment and passion required to become a successful nurse.

He also focused on the teacher's role in guiding and mentoring students and congratulated all the students for their decision to become nurses.

He stressed that teachers should continue to strive in producing quality students.

Principal Prof. Kanakalakshmi, said the lamp lighting was a tribute to Florence Nightingale who was the founder of the modern day nursing and the pledge was to serve society.

She informed GITAM Nursing Institute is attracting students from Kerala, Manipur, Nepal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

The institute is offering UG, PG programmes with the approval of Nursing Council.

GITAM Registrar Prof.KVGD Balaji, GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) Medical Superintendent Dr. Shyamprasad, GITAM Joint Secretary M.Bharadwaj and nursing institute faculty members, students participated in the program. Nursing is the only profession that follows lamp lighting ceremony.
