Built in partnership with AFPRO, the sanitary units help improve health and hygiene practices

Hyderabad: Mahyco Monsanto Biotech Limited (MMB), in partnership with, Action for Food Production (AFPRO) has undertaken an Integrated Community Development (ICD) Project encompassing safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Over the four-year tenure of the project, between 2015 to 2019, 185 individual household sanitation units and 11 sanitation facilities in government schools have been constructed benefitting over 1,000 community members and 3,000 children respectively in Rangareddy, Khammam, and Medak districts of Telangana.

At the Zilla Panchayat High School, Shahpur Nagar, Chintal, separate sanitation units for boys and girls have also been constructed. Additionally, a separate area for hand wash has also been readied up.

Over 1,000 children will benefit from this facility.

Talking about the sanitation facilities, Dhanalakshmi Ramachandra, CSR & Sustainability Lead, Monsanto India said, "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are among the basic needs for human health and survival.

Of the one billion people in the world with no toilets, India accounts for nearly 600 million.

We are committed towards sensitizing communities and children on aspects of health and hygiene.

Our intervention has seen a rise in the number of girl students attending school".

To bring about an overall change in the outlook of these community members towards health and hygiene, children are encouraged to follow personal hygiene practices like washing hands, personal grooming and adopt healthy eating habits.

K Balabuchamma, Headmistress – ZPHS Shahpur Nagar, said "Shahpur Nagar Zilla Panchayat High School is one of the biggest schools in Rangareddy district with 720 students. The support from MMB in the construction of toilets in the school has helped in easy accessibility for students and staff. This facility is specifically beneficial for adolescent girls."

" In line with the "Swachh Bharat Mission," of creating an Open-Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2019, we are focusing on building household sanitation units and sensitizing the communities on health and hygiene.

Between 2014-2017, we have invested significantly in providing sanitation facilities to communities in several states.

The on-ground impact of all these efforts has led to a behavioural change in the community towards health and hygiene, she added.
