Elephants have a remarkable maternal instinct. The females and children usually tend to travel together in herds. They walk in circle with the youngest member on the inside in order to care for them and protect them, of course, each elephant has its own mother. However, if one of them becomes an orphan, the rest of the herd would adopt him. They will leave the young animals alone or helpless until they reach adulthood.

Kangaroos: They splendid maternal instinct, not only do they protect their babies by carrying them in their pouches for months, but they can also kill anyone who tries to hurt them with just one kick.

Crocodile: we find crocodile mother seen picking up her babies in her jaws to bring them safely to the water. The astonishing thing here, how they tend to know, to be very gentile, when they have jaws, which are built to crush bones in no time.

Whales: These are among the grandest matriarchs in the whole animal kingdom. Many whale species even have life-long commitment. Many whale species such orcas, have lifelong bond with young owns. Orca mothers have been seen carrying their child, even if it is died shortly after birth. The whole pod also supports her in the grief and even helps carrying the baby’s weight when the mother gets weak. Researchers have found out, that orcas mourn the death of their young ones for weeks and finally let go the child’s bod. Whales have also been caring for other animals in need.

Mice are also known to exhibit maternal instincts, just like humans. Mothers of this species are known to grab their wandering babies to keep them out of danger.
