x
Highlights

Zakat is also one of the five pillars of Islam, it is an integral part of the Muslim faith which means giving of alms to the poor and needy.

During Ramadan, Muslims observe Roza (fast) from dawn to dusk. The holy month also brings the blessings of spiritual cleansing, an attempt to get closer to Almighty and learn empathy. Ramadan helps us to understand human suffering in a better way and show compassion towards those who are less fortunate.

Almighty reminds us to be generous and do more charity during this month which is known as Zakat. It helps us to get rid of greed, excess desire and learn honesty.

Zakat is also one of the five pillars of Islam like fasting. It is an integral part of the Muslim faith which means giving of alms to the poor and needy. Zakat is mandatory for those who are financially capable.

There are two types of Zakat:

1. Zakat ul-Mal, which needs to give away 2.5% of wealth to the poor and needy.

2. Zakat-ul-Fitr is also for the poor and needy but the amount is smaller which must be given before the commencement of Eid ul-Fitr (Festival of Breaking Fast)

As per the Quran, these eight groups of people are eligible for Zakat.

1. The Fuqara' (the poor)

2. Al-Maskin (the needy)

3. Aamileen (Zakat collector)

4. Muallafatul Quloob (poor and needy who recently converted to Islam)

5. Ar-Riqab (slaves; Zakat can be used to purchase their freedom)

6. Ibnus-Sabeel (A stranded traveller in need of financial assistance)

7. Al Ghaarimeen (A debtor)

8. Fi Sabeelillah (Those who are away from home in the path of Allah)
