Mandya: As the Lok Sabha Election fervour intensifies across the nation, the political landscape in Sugar district of Mandya is witnessing a flurry of activity. While the JDS alliance ticket is firmly in place, with indications pointing towards HD Kumaraswamy’s candidature, speculation mounts over the next move of sitting MP Sumalatha Ambareesh. Additionally, JDS leaders are engaged in strategic negotiations to secure victory in Mandya. HD Kumaraswamy’s decision to contest Mandya comes amidst mounting pressure from local activists. However, the move has sparked dissent among JDS workers in Ramanagara district, who advocate for Kumaraswamy’s presence in Channapatnam and Nikhil’s promotion from Mandya. Caught in this crossfire, HDK’s candidature remains a subject of intrigue.
Meanwhile, the BJP high command’s decision to cede Mandya, Hassan, and Kolar constituencies to the JDS has rattled Sumalatha Ambarish, who was in talks with the BJP until recently. Sumalatha, confident of securing the BJP ticket, expressed her determination to uphold the lotus symbol and contest the elections. However, the allocation of three key constituencies to the JDS has left Sumalatha grappling with disappointment.
In a bid to sway Sumalatha’s allegiance, former CM Kumaraswamy made overtures during a recent meeting in Mandya, appealing for her cooperation. Mandya’s former sitting MLA is also slated to visit Sumalatha soon, signaling efforts to garner her support.
Mandya’s JDS leaders are keen on incorporating Sumalatha into their election strategy, recognising the enduring charisma of late cinestar Ambarish in the region. As the battle lines are drawn, Sumalatha’s formidable presence and Ambarish’s enduring legacy could potentially sway votes in Mandya. However, the prospect of internal discord poses challenges for Kumaraswamy’s electoral prospects. With this in mind, strategists are mulling over the possibility of forging a united front with Sumalatha, recognising the advantages of a collaborative approach.
