Hyderabad: Water consumers in the city are rushing to HMWSSB to regularise their connections after being served with notices with penalty and chargesheets, following a door-to-door campaign survey in the city.

Over 3000 illegal water connections were regularised during the survey and 940 illegal connections, 2,604 commercial connections, 1,038 residential connections and 1,273 unregularised connections await regularisation, which would generate a revenue of around Rs 6.5 crore for HMWSSB.

HMWSSB provided opportunity to regularise illegal water connections under Voluntary Disclosure Scheme (VDS) with a nominal charge. The VDS which was launched on November 22 will end on February 21, 2020. The objective of the scheme is to enable users who obtained unauthorised connection to get them regularised.

Consumers can submit their applications online with a nominal charge and illegal connections owners had to pay one month penalty-moratorium along with application charges. After the VDS period, if any illegal connections are caught, the Water Board will impose penalties amounting to twice the connection charges along with three years of usage charges in addition with the service charges of Rs 300. Moreover, if the illegal connections are not regularised in the given period, consumers will also be facing criminal charges apart from penalties.

HMWSSB says that this will benefit the board by reflecting positively on the monthly revenue, and chances of more than Rs 20 lakh revenue can be gained after regularisation.

Following these special drives, HMWSSB hopes to bridge its deficit, by curbing supply of non-revenue water. The monthly revenue of the Water Board escalated to Rs 150 crore from Rs 120 crore and the Water Board survey is still underway to identify illegal water connections.
