Secunderabad : South Central Railway has taken the initiative of supplying Fog Pass devices to loco pilots duly adopting the digital technology for smooth and fool proof train operations Fog Pass device is a GPS based handheld portable device which serves as an aid to alert the crew during foggy weather regarding upcoming landmarks through audio and visual indication.

On the initial phase, SCR has supplied around 250 numbers of Fog Pass devices each to Secunderabad and Vijayawada divisions. These Fog Pass devices are kept at the crew booking points in both the divisions and are issued to the loco pilot while signing on for the duty. During the thick foggy weather condition, loco pilots find it difficult to see the surrounding locations and aspect of the approaching signal.

Due to this Loco Pilots are forced to restrict the speed of the train resulting in loss of punctuality. To enhance safety and also to improve the punctuality in train operations, SCR has introduced Fog Pass devices, which helps the loco pilots by alerting through audio and visual indication well before the approaching signals, level crossings and stations. The Fog Pass device displays details of upcoming three landmarks along with distance from current location. Audio alert will be given around 500 meters before any approaching landmark.

Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, South Central Railway, pointed out that FOG PASS devices are serving as helping hands to loco pilots and are handy to carry. He also advised all the loco pilots to make use of the equipment for smooth and hassle-free train operations. Further, plans are on hand to supply similar equipment to other divisions also, he added.
