Hyderabad: The State Election Commission has allotted symbols to five political parties contesting the GHMC polls and it will remain with them for five years provided they comply with the rules. Hindustan Janata Party was given coconut farm symbol, India Prajabandhu Party was given Trumpet symbol, Jana Sena Party -glass tumbler, Marxist Party of India United-gas cylinder and Indian Praja Congress was given a whistle symbol.

The SEC has clarified that these parties can make use of these symbols allotted for five years and contest in any local body or general elections. If they failed to contest for 10 per cent of the seats, the allotted symbol would be cancelled and the respective party would lose the chance to apply for symbol for five years. Also, the allotted symbols are confined only to the wards where the party fields a candidate and can be given to other parties in other wards.
