Hyderabad: In a significant development, the Telangana Health Department has sounded an alert to political leaders, activists and supporters of various political parties who were literally on roads as part of GHMC poll campaigning for the last two weeks.

Director of Public Health Dr G Srinivasa Rao has called upon all of them to be in isolation for one week and not to venture outside unless its an emergency. He advised them to go for Covid test in case they developed related symptoms and not become one of the reasons for the second wave in Telangana.

At a press meet held here on Wednesday, the Director said that they were suspecting jump in infections because of GHMC polls. However, it would take a week's time to know about the election impact on Covid cases. He made a mention of an increase in cases in Jagtial district off late due to mass gathering of people for weddings and functions.

Dr Srinivasa Rao pointed out that all political parties aggressively campaigned and the public also participated in large numbers.

He said, " It is in our hands to ensure there is no Second Wave in Telangana. The government is taking all required measures and steps to contain Covid spread and it is the duty of citizens also to be alert.

Telangana is doing good with less positivity rate, less fatality rate and high recovery rate compared to other states in the country. At present, 65,000 plus tests are being done every day in nearly 1100 testing centres and efforts are on to add another 50 centres in GHMC limits soon."

DME Dr K Ramesh Reddy said that there are chances of corona infection in some of those who did not follow Covid safety protocols like wearing of mask etc during GHMC polls.

Symptoms, if any, are likely to occur between five to ten days for such individuals. Individuals must not communicate with family members during self-isolation at their homes and ensure the use of masks, hand sanitizers, and physical distance.
