Hyderabad: Students take tuitions as syllabus not completed

Hussaini Alam: Besides the Covid pandemic, the staff crunch and other factors impinged upon the smooth run of online classes at Hussainialam Government Degree College for Women, forcing the students to take up private tuitions for their upcoming semester examinations to be held this month.

The students of BCom, BSc and BA appearing for their 2nd and 4th-semester exams are left in the lurch as the major portion of the syllabus remained incomplete. "For subjects like Commerce and Economics, there are no lecturers, hence, we are forced to take private tutorials by paying huge fees. Those students who are unable to pay for private tuitions are suffering a lot," said a student on the condition of anonymity.

The college was set up in 1984 and is one of the oldest Government colleges in Old City for women. There are more than 1,600 students in college and each class, or a section has more than 80 students. Around 24 lecturers are taking online classes for these students and for remaining subjects, students are taking private tuitions as the exams are going to start from January 19.

"No online classes were conducted for computer science, biological science and even English, as there is only one English lecturer. We are making rounds to the college for help, but there is no lecturer for the subject. We are taking help by using study materials and asking doubts from the present faculty," said another student.

According to sources, the administration is handled by the senior lecturers in college. "From the 42 posts sanctioned for the college, 24 are vacant. Recently after the examinations were announced six lecturers were recruited and still 18 are vacant. The College has only four regular lecturers including one librarian, 10 on contract basis and this year Directorate of Higher Education is yet to recruit the guest lecturers and denied the request given by the Telangana Degree Lecturers Forum (TDLF)," added the source.
