Major blow to minority colleges in TS: Congress
The Congress party has lashed out at the TRS Government for closure of 64 minority engineering, management, MCA and pharmaceutical colleges across Telangana State during the last five years.
Nampally: The Congress party has lashed out at the TRS Government for closure of 64 minority engineering, management, MCA and pharmaceutical colleges across Telangana State during the last five years. Blaming the government for the closures, the party also demanded the setting up of an independent commission to probe into the factors that led to their closure.
Addressing a press conference along with Hyderabad Congress Committee Minorities Department Chairman Sameer Waliullah at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) official spokesman Syed Nizamuddin said that the number of private unaided minority institutions in Telangana State has been reduced significantly ever since the TRS came to power in 2014.
Citing statistics from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Nizamuddin informed that the number of engineering and technology colleges has come down from 56 in 2014-15 to just 32 in 2019-20. It means that 24 minority engineering colleges have been closed under the TRS rule, he lamented. Similarly, 17 management colleges have been wound up with their number getting reduced from 67 in 2014-15 to 50 in 2019-20. Furthermore, 19 MCA and 3 pharmaceutical minority colleges have also been closed down during the last five years.
The Congress leader alleged that by not clearing the fee reimbursement dues, the TRS government pushed the private minority colleges into a financial crisis which ultimately resulted in their closure. By not giving scholarships, KCR government discouraged the minority students from pursuing higher education.
The enrolment ratio too has gone down in private minority colleges. From 41.7% in 2014-15, it came down to just 36.51% in 2018-19. While a total of 23,706 students enrolled themselves in various colleges in 2014-15, the total enrolment in 2018-19 was a mere 14,650. "Closure of 64 colleges and reduction in intake of 25,019 students is the achievement of the KCR government," he lamented.
Nizamuddin said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao came to power in 2014 on the slogan of 'KG to PG Free Education for All'. He had also promised 12% reservation for Muslims in jobs and education. "Due to non-implementation of the fee reimbursement scheme and scholarships, minority students were discouraged from pursuing higher education," he alleged.
Nizamuddin said that the situation at the national level under the BJP-led NDA Government was no different. At the all-India level, the number of institutions has increased from 884 in 2014-15 to 905 in 2019-20 registering an increase by 21 institutions. However, the intake has reduced from 3,64,566 in 2014-15 to 3,27,461. This means the overall intake has reduced by 37,105 students. "The reduction shows how much the BJP Government believes in 'Sabka Saath - Sabka Vikas'," he added.
