Bahadurpura: A Veterinary Expert Committee meeting was organised under the chairmanship of curator, N Kshitija at Nehru Zoological Park in Bahadurpura on Monday. The seepage water from Mir Alam tank into the moats was found to be a major issue and possible problem of infections amongst the zoo inmates. In the meeting, Kshitija requested the committee members to give suggestion and come out with action plan for prophylaxis, health and renovation of housing and veterinary care. She also stressed upon the enrichment of primates and renovation of moats for better care and health management of the wild animals.

Deputy Director (Retd), Dr M Navin Kumar suggested to stop the seepage of Mir Alam water into the wet moats and pairing of the same sex animals. More cages can be built for breeding of the mouse deer and monitoring of the animals in a systematic way.

Professor and Head (Retd) Dr K Ramakrishna suggested to add B-Complex in the feed and water and to maintain prophylactic measures seasonally. He also suggested to do vaccination of animals outside the zoo to protect the animals and complete hygiene of zoo animal keepers may be taken care for control of zoonotic diseases.

Experts from VBRI, Hyderabad suggested chlorination of wet moats as per schedule and also for vaccination of animals in and around the zoo to protect them from the seasonal diseases.

Experts from College of Veterinary Science, Rajendranagar suggested that there should be a treatment plant for Mir Alam seepage water into the moats. So that there is minimum infection caused by the water borne diseases especially for primates and rodent population in the zoo should also be controlled to minimise spread of diseases like leptospirosis and other rodent borne infection.

Expert from LaCONES suggested to give proper ventilation for the primate area enclosures and securing the animal keepers by screening them regularly to check for diseases transmitted from animals to keepers and vice versa.

Deputy Director (Vet) Dr MA Hakeem, Asst Director (Vet) Dr Shambulingam, Senior Scientist LaCONES (Attapur) Dr Sadanand Sontakke, Disease Monitoring Cell, VBRI, Shantinagar, Assistant Director, Dr Sunitha, College of Veterinary Science (Rajendranagar) Professor and others were present.
