Secunderabad: A mock United Nations Conference was held at DRS International School, Kompally, from August 8 to 10. Seventh Model United Nations Conference, DRSMUN2K19, received affiliation yet again from the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC). This is the third year in a row that the conference has received the prestigious recognition.

The three-day conference saw more than 350 students in attendance from 25 schools, representing nearly 80 countries in eight committees. The run-up to DRSMUN2K19 had included pre-conference training that equipped delegates to sharpen their advocacy skills as well as opportunities to practice mediation, negotiation, arbitration and lobbying.

Under the leadership of Secretary General Krishna Kyathi, a Grade 11 student from DRS International School, the conference witnessed delegates take on, and skillfully tackle challenging real-world issues such as healthcare measures for refugees and migrants, socio-economic instabilities in the Middle East, the formation of new international borders, international interventions in regional civil wars etc.

The proceedings of each of the eight committees, including WHO, ECOSOC, HRC, HPPC, DISEC, SC, INTERPOL and UNEA, were expertly helmed by members of the Executive Board. The members of the International Press also played a pivotal role in the conference, holding press conferences and publishing three newsletters that insightfully covered the proceedings of each committee.

"As an inclusive conference, DRSMUN2K19 is a strong springboard for all participants, regardless of their previous MUN experience," quipped AK Agarwal, the school's managing director of the school. Dr Muradia, Director, described the conference as "A unique opportunity for self-discovery through global engagement." As the curtains closed on the conference, Janet Fanaian, president, DRSMUN2K19, stressed the need for young student voices to continue to empower themselves by "practising civilized diplomacy through negotiation."
