Kukatpally: The residents of KPHB and Kukatpally are facing severe inconveniences due to regular traffic jam on NH65 (Mumbai Highway). This is not a new problem for the commuters here. It has been the case from the last few years.

The jam-packed roads have a spiraling effect and the bumper-to-bumper traffic makes life difficult for the commuters in Kukatpally. The main reason for the traffic jam is the entry of private travel buses on the highway. The traffic begins at 8 pm, as the private buses start picking up their passengers.

• Roads are virtually taken over by these huge Volvo buses

• Traffic jams at Nizampet X Roads-Kukatpally Y Junction

• Normally, it takes about 10 min from Nizampet to Kukatpally

• After 8 pm, traffic trudges, same travel takes nearly 25 minutes

The traffic jams begin from Nizampet X Roads and continue up to Kukatpally Y Junction. In normal times, it takes around 10 min to travel from Nizampet to Kukatpally, but after 8 pm it will take nearly 25 min due to heavy traffic.

"Nearly 300 to 400 RTC buses travel on the highway depending upon the demand. The RTC buses start at 4 pm and they move fast, but in the peak times between 8 pm and 11 pm, all the private buses block the way, making it difficult for the commuters every day, say Subramanyam, an RTC Employee

During weekends and festivals, the situation turns worse, as more people travel in private buses. A large number of private buses, lack of adequate parking space and haphazardly-parked buses deteriorate the situation.

Rajesh, a software employee, said, "Every day, I go from this way to my home. The roads are blocked by the private buses. A large number of passengers wait for the buses on the road and it slows down the traffic."

"We have divided the road in KPHB bus stop, exclusively for the buses. But in weekends, the buses will be more and the traffic is also high. Whenever there is traffic jam, extra traffic police get on to the field to clear the Traffic," says a traffic police officer.
