Uppal: The Vishwakarma Artisans' Association demanded allocation of Rs1,000 crore in the State budget to the artisans, besides payment of Rs 3,000 as pension for those aged above 50 years.

At the meeting, with Bheeshma Chary in the chair, the association alleged that harassment from the police and Forest Department officials on Vishwakarma community persons was increasing.

The association demanded that the ill-treatment be stopped immediately. It sought unconditional 90 per cent subsidised bank loans of Rs 10 lakh to persons belonging to the community.

Chary alleged that of the Rs 200 crore allotted to the community, not a paisa was spent so far and that its interest was totally neglected in the budget, while expressing anguish. He said at a symposium to be held here on September 29, an action plan for the betterment of the artisans would be finalised.

Among those present at the meeting were association representatives Lellela Balakrishna, Rallabandi Kumaraswamy, Yadagiri Chary, S Srihari, Srinivasa Chary, Shekhar Chary Srihari, Brahma Chary, Lakshminarayana Chary and R Brahma Chary.
