Hyderabad: Despite having the highestliteracy rate of 83.25 per cent among all districts of Telangana, Hyderabad is witnessing GHMC elections wherein 'under-graduates' are dominating the list of candidates seeking mandate from 74,04,286 voters. The polls largely perceived as a "battle for throne of Hyderabad are scheduled to be held on December 1.

As per the list released recently by GHMC, of the 1,122 contenders, there are 548 under-graduates, 200 graduates and 99 PGs . Six are shown as illiterates. According to the literacy parameters shown in the "Telangana social development report 2017," the proportion of graduates in Hyderabad district is 12.8 per cent, while PGs constitute 1.9 per cent. Similarly, 10.7 per cent figure in the secondary education column.

A majority of the candidates showed occupation as 'business' followed by housewives and private employees making the foray a complete business affair with an animated spirit of serving the public.

For the third GHMC elections in a row, a total of 21 parties are in the fray. They include BJP, AIMIM, TRS, Congress, AIMIM (Inquilab), TDP, BMP, CPI, CPM, MCPIU, JSP, TJSP, INYJP, AIFB, DBP, IPBP, IND, HINDJP, WPI, MJP and IPC. However, no party enjoyed that much of a support from people to field candidates from all 150 wards. Of the total 74,04,286 voters, men account for 38,56,770 and women 35,46,847, while 669 are transgenders. The State Election Commission has set up 9,235 polling stations to elicit people's mandate.
