Khammam: A woman farmer attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in front of Palair MLA Kandala Upender Reddy seeking justice by paying compensation to a labourer couple, who electrocuted last month at her fields.
According to information, Tummala Jyothi (30) is a tenant farmer in Bodulabanda village in Nelakondapalli mandal. She cultivated sugarcane on five acres of leased land along with a labour couple - T Anand Rao and Parvathi. The couple died due to electric shock while working in the fields. The woman farmer agreed to pay Rs 6 lakh compensation to the victim's family and paid some amount.
On Monday, woman tenant farmer Jyothi met MLA Kandala Upender Reddy, who came to Bodulabanda village to examine paddy procurement. She explained her financial position and urged the MLA to do justice as she was not able to pay the compensation. She also informed that TRANSCO department sanctioned Rs 5 lakh as exgratia, taking the responsibility for the couple's death but some middlemen are forcing her to pay the remaining amount. While the MLA was talking to her, she consumed pesticide which she brought along with her and fell unconscious.
Following the MLA orders, the officials shifted her to government hospital in Nelakondapalli and later shifted to headquarter hospital for better treatment.
MLA Upender Reddy said that he came to know that the woman farmers had agreed to pay compensation to the couple's family but didn't paid till date and assured of looking into the matter.
