Excise Minister Jawahar to contest against MLA Rakshana
After losing elections three times in a row in 2004, 2009 and 2014, the TDP is now determined to win in Tiruvuru Assembly constituency in this elections and fielding Excise Minister K S Jawahar to win the poll battle.
Vijayawada: After losing elections three times in a row in 2004, 2009 and 2014, the TDP is now determined to win in Tiruvuru Assembly constituency in this elections and fielding Excise Minister K S Jawahar to win the poll battle.
Kothapalli Samuel Jawahar earlier won the elections in 2014 from Kovvur Assembly constituency in West Godavari. Since, he is native of Tiruvuru mandal, the TDP leadership decided to field Jawar from the constituency after a series of meetings with the leaders.
TDP Supremo and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu confirmed the name of Jawahar only on March 14. Before that there was intense competition between the former MLA Nallagatla Swamy Das and Jawahar. Swamy Das was denied ticket as he was defeated three times consecutively in 2004, 2009 and 2014 in the hands of Koneru Ranga Rao, D Padma Jyoty of Congress and K Rakshana Nidhi of YSRCP.
Swamy Das was defeated by a margin of 1,676 votes in the tough battle. Swamy Das is not happy with the decision of party leadership and expressed his displeasure over the decision of choosing Jawahar, who has no followers in Tiruvuru constituency.
Swamy Das won the elections from Tiruvuru constituency in 1994 and 1999. Keeping in view of the past track record of Swamy Das, the CM has denied the ticket to him. As every MLA segment seems crucial in the Assembly elections in 2019, the TDP is trying to field winning horses without taking any chances. In this backdrop, Swamy Das was denied the ticket.
On the other hand, K S Jawahar was working as a teacher in West Godavari district and joined TDP before the 2014 elections. Now, Jawahar has only three weeks for the campaign and has to depend on the local TDP leaders to win the elections. He was busy meeting the local TDP leaders for the last two days and been trying to convince them to join the election campaign.
But, it is not known how far the TDP cadre would extend support to Jawahar, who has no followers and supporters in Tiruvuru segment. He has been living in West Godavari for a long time working as a teacher and became an MLA for nearly five years. On the other hand, the YSRCP candidate K Rakshana Nidhi was elected in 2014. The YSRCP leadership has announced the candidature of Rakshana Nidhi many months and he has been canvassing in the constituency for a couple of months.
The constituency is spread over Tiruvuru, Gampalagudem, A Konduru and Vissanna peta mandal and it has been reserved for SCs in 1967. Tiruvuru is one of the water scarcity areas in the district and lagged in agriculture and industrial development. The SC and BC voters constitute more than 60 per cent of total voters. Back ward classes Gowdas, Rajakas and Yadavas are in sizeable numbers in the constituency.
