Visakhapatnam: With an aim to improve air quality and bring down the emission of hazardous gases, the Central and State governments have come together to initiate a project.

In connection with this, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has commenced its groundwork by drawing up a strategy to wrap up the project by 2025.

The Central government has taken the initiative to curb pollution in the cities with a population of over one million and Visakhapatnam forms a part of the list selected.

According to the official sources, the project will see increased bicycle tracks, e-vehicles and installation of electrostatic precipitator devices (ESP) in industrial areas. Elaborating on the project, Superintendent Engineer (GVMC) KVN Ravi says, "The project is still in the nascent stage. Based on the instructions from the Municipal Commissioner G Srijana, it will be taken forward."

The project, being taken up at a cost of Rs 73 crore, aims to reduce PM (particulate matter) 2.5 and PM10 and the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is extending financial support to it. In line with this, the State government has sanctioned Rs.35 crore in the first phase.

The city will utilise the ESP filtration devices to get rid of the suspended dust particles from air and other gases in smokestacks.

Given the presence of the industries in the City of Destiny, the air pollution concentrations are significantly high. The installation of the ESP devices helps in handling large volumes of gas as well as suspended dust particles at low pressure. The filtration devices can collect both wet and dry impurities. There are several stations under the control of the Pollution Control Board to determine pollution levels present in various areas across the city. Close to 50 smart pools have been set up in the city as a part of the Smart City Project.

Along with the introduction of the ESP devices, eco-friendly measures will also be considered to bring down the pollution level. Facilitating bicycle tracks and increasing the fleet of e-vehicles is a step towards this direction.
