Warangal: The breach that developed on Kakatiya Canal of Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) bund threatened to submerge the neighbourhood of Gundla Singaram village on Tuesday. The timely response from the irrigation officials, who lifted the gates and diverted the waters to the main canal, averted the threat, but not before the floodwaters created flutter among the residents of Indiramma Colony.

Floodwaters started to flow into Indiramma colony after the canal bund developed a crater. The officials had a tough time in opening the gates, however, they managed to lift them. The residents of Indiramma Colony said that it was not the first time they were facing such a situation.

They said that poor quality of work led to the breach. Even though modernisation of the canal took place a year ago,

maintenance of the canal was poor, the locals said. They also alleged that canal bund had weakened due to illegal constructions near the canal. SRSP, Warangal, Deputy Executive Engineer (DEE), Balakrishna Kalakuntla said that due to the movement of heavy vehicles, a part of canal bund caved in. An earthmover was pressed into service to repair the damage, he added.

Meanwhile, both the Ministers Errabelli Dayakar Rao and Satyavathi Rathod directed the irrigation officials to address the problem with immediate effect.
