Coimbatore: Five engineering students sitting on the railway track and consuming liquor were run over by a train. In the incident, four students died on the spot, and one sustained severe injuries.

The incident happened on the Rowthar Palam rail over-bridge near Sulur in Coimbatore. The deceased were identified as D Siddique Raja (22), Rajasekar (20), M Gowtham(23), and Karuppasamy (24) all are the students of a private engineering college in Coimbatore. They belong to Kodaikanal, Theni, and Viruthunagar districts.

M Vignesh (22), a final year engineering student was rescued with grievous injuries and is receiving treatment in a private hospital. It's suspected that students were out here to consume liquor as alcohol bottles and plastic glasses were found lying near the track. The Chennai- Alappuzha express train hit them.

Over receiving the information, Bothanur Railway Police reached the spot, immediately rushed Vignesh to the hospital and shifted the dead bodies to Coimbatore government medical hospital for post-mortem.

The railway police said that this incident had taken place as the students were sitting and drinking alcohol on the track. On the accident, the police registered a case and investigating further.
