Antarctica Snow Now Green, Thanks To Global Warming

White carpet of snow in Antarctica is a common sight. But how about green snow? You read that right. Algae blooms have lent a green tinge to a few areas of the icy region.

As per a new research, warmer temperatures caused by climate change is responsible for the formation of green snow. A map created by the research team from the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey along with European Space Agency's Sentinel 2 satellite shows algae blooms on the Antarctic Peninsula coast.

Researchers are also looking at mapping studies on red and orange algae from Space.

Matt Davey of the University of Cambridge's Department of Plant Sciences, states, "The algal blooms in Antarctica are equivalent to about the amount of carbon that's being omitted by 875,000 average UK petrol car journeys."

Experts say that even though it takes carbon from the atmosphere, it is unlikely to cause any serious dent in the amount of carbondioxide in the atmosphere.

Climate activists and environmentalists have been calling for preservation of Planet earth and protesting against extreme urbanisation which has turned the world into a concrete jungle.

Child climate activist Greta Thunberg led by example when she attended an environment meet this year by skipping air travel. She said she wanted to cut down on carbon foot prints.

The coronavirus lockdown has brought down pollution levels across countries. The air, experts say is much cleaner than before. The number of diseases is said to have come down in the last two months thanks to the total shut down.
