Russia confirms record 11,656 cases in 24 hrs
Washington/Moscow: The global death toll due to the novel coronavirus pandemic has surpassed the 280,000 mark, while the cases have surged to over 4,216,283, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Monday, the global death toll stood at 284,724, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) said in its latest update.
The US had the highest number of deaths in the world at 80,846, while the UK accounted for the highest in Europe with 32,065 fatalities.
The other countries with over 10,000 Covid-19 deaths were Italy (30,560), Spain (26,744), France (26,383) and Brazil (11,207), the CSSE data showed.
Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in the world has increased to 4,102,849.
The US still accounts for the highest number of cases in the world at 1,369,943.
The other nations with cases above the 100,000 marks are Spain (268,143), the UK (223,060), Italy (219,070), France (177,094), Germany (171,999), Brazil (163,510), Turkey (138,657) and Iran (109,286).
Meanwhile, Russia has reported a record 11,656 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours, raising the total number of infections to 221,344, the country's coronavirus response centre said ont Monday.
The more than 10,000 single-day increase has now entered the ninth day, Xinhua news agency.
The death toll grew by 94 to 2,009, while 39,801 people have recovered, including a record of 5,495 over the last 24 hours, the statement said. Moscow, the country's worst-hit region, confirmed 6,169 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 115,909.
Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said on Monday that 247,842 people were under medical observation as of Sunday.
More than 5.6 million lab tests for Covid-19 have been conducted across the country so far, it added.
