Nepal Flood Rescue: 2 Workers Pulled Alive From Hydropower Tunnel After 9 Days
Two workers were rescued alive from the Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, nine days after flash floods swept through the region, offering fresh hope that more people trapped inside underground facilities could still be found.
Rescue teams also reported hearing voices from deeper inside the tunnel, prompting the Nepal Army and Armed Police Force to intensify their efforts to reach possible survivors.
The latest rescue operation comes as Nepal continues to search for thousands of people reported missing following the August 26 disaster.
Two Workers Rescued After Nine Days
Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Shri Ram Neupane, an engineer involved in the rescue operation, identified the two rescued workers as Sanjay Sah, a mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharjan, a mechanical supervisor.
Sah was brought out of the tunnel first, followed by Maharjan.
Earlier, Neupane had said rescuers received a response after calling out to people believed to be trapped inside the tunnel.
According to him, members of the rescue team heard voices from within the passage and told those inside not to panic as efforts were underway to bring them out. “Information has been received from the rescue team that the voices of people have been heard from inside. When the rescue team said, ‘Don’t panic, we are rescuing you,’ a response was received from inside,” he said.
The development raised hopes that other workers could also be alive inside the underground facility.
Rescue Teams Push Deeper Into Tunnel
Teams from the Nepal Army and Armed Police Force have been working to clear the passages and reach areas blocked by mud and debris.
The rescue effort has been complicated by damaged infrastructure, difficult weather conditions and limited access to underground sections of the hydropower facilities.
Heavy machinery and specialised equipment have been deployed to remove accumulated mud and debris and open a route into the tunnel.
Neupane expressed gratitude to the military personnel, technical experts and other rescuers involved in the operation, saying the discovery of voices inside the tunnel was an encouraging sign.
40 Reported Missing From Trishuli-3A
At least 40 people were reportedly missing from the Trishuli-3A project following the floods.
The situation is part of a much larger crisis affecting Nepal’s hydropower sector. More than 900 workers were reportedly unaccounted for across at least six hydropower projects after the disaster.
Families of missing workers have continued to wait for updates, with some travelling to affected areas while others have approached government offices and Army Headquarters seeking information.
The rescue of the two Trishuli-3A workers has offered a renewed sense of hope to relatives still waiting for news of their loved ones.
Two Bodies Recovered From Another Hydropower Project
While the rescue at Trishuli-3A brought encouraging news, another operation produced a grim discovery.
At the Rasuwa Langtang Khola Hydropower Project, a Nepal Army search-and-rescue team recovered two bodies from inside a tunnel.
Rescuers had advanced approximately 150 metres into the passage during the operation.
Around 41 people working at the 20-MW hydropower project remain uncontacted, according to the information available, leaving families awaiting further developments.
