In Eraviperoor of Pathanamthitta district, on October 19, a two-and-a-half-year-old dog named blackie, was found in a pool of blood after the owners Santhosh Kumar and Sali Santhosh rushed to their car porch following a loud noise.

Their neighbour, Ajith Kumar, was seen hitting the dog with a stick, Santhosh was also attacked when he tried to save the dog. Moments later, the assailant had stabbed the dog with a knife, and allegedly vandalised the house with his brother.

The incident is being investigated by the Kerala State Animal Welfare Board (KAWB). A case has also been filed by the Tiruvalla police.

As per sources, Blackie used to bark when he saw Ajith, which allegedly was the reason behind the attack.

Photos of Blackie with wounds are also being shared on social media platforms.

"Whenever Blackie sees Ajith passing by our house, he barks. But the gate would be locked, and he has never hurt anybody. On the day of the incident, I saw Blackie barking at Ajith. I then tied him up on the porch and went inside the house. Later, we heard a loud sound, then Blackie whimpering and something hitting the window. When Santhosh tried to block him, he was also assaulted," Sali Santhosh told the media.

She alleged that, "We got scared and went inside the house. Ajith then fell on the ground. After some time, he returned with his brother Anil, entered our house and started breaking all the objects here. They also destroyed our cars, furniture and appliances."

The was also stabbed, causing a nine-centimetre deep wound on his body. "The dog needs long-term treatment. Initially, we thought he was dead. We can't see him like this. We got him when he was a few days old," she said.

According to the Thiruvalla Circle Inspector Baiju, a case has been registered against Ajith and Anil, under section 359 (assault), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 442 (House trespass) and 445 (house breaking), among others, of the Indian Penal Code. "The accused have been absconding but we have started the investigation," he said.
